Young Danny Madigan is a big fan of Jack Slater, a larger-than-life action hero played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. When his best friend, Nick the projectionist, gives him a magic ticket to the new Jack Slater film, Danny is transported into Slater's world, where the good guys always win. One of Slater's enemies, Benedict the hitman, gets hold of the ticket and ends up in Danny's world, where he realizes that if he can kill Schwarzenegger, Slater will be no more. Slater and Danny must travel back and stop him.
I'm with the majority (as of this date) here…this film isn't THAT bad. Although savaged by critics and viewers alike, the film is ambitious, sporadically funny (not always intentionally) and has some good scenes. Not many stars of Arnold's magnitude will produce a self-parody at the height of their careers. (Unlike some - Stallone? - who inadvertently self-parody at the peak of their careers.) Viewers will most likely NOT rent this again and again, but it was DEFINITELY better than "The Avengers" and "Batman and Robin."<br/><br/>In sum, you've got to like an Arnold action flick that introduces the mass film audience to Bergman. A "6" out of "10."
'Last Action Hero' - Arnie plays both himself, and action-hero and fictional character Jack Slater in this spoof of Hollywood action movies. Danny Madigan, a fan of Arnie's Jack Slater movies, inherits a magic movie-ticket, and is transported into Jack Slater's latest film.<br/><br/>The movie is filled with the action-clichés: cheesy one-liners, destructive car chases, loud explosions, last-minute saves, predictable plot-twists etc. 'Last Action Hero' is a fun movie - an enjoyable action spoof, and an can be enjoyablean action movie if you don't take it seriously.<br/><br/>7/10 - not one of Arnie's finest, but still pretty good. Don't take it seriously and you should have fun watching 'Last Action Hero'.
For all of its sensational stunts and flashes of wit, however, Last Action Hero plays more like a bright idea than like a movie that was thought through. It doesn't evoke the mystery of the barrier between audience and screen the way Woody Allen did, and a lot of the time it simply seems to be standing around commenting on itself.
Teenage boy Danny Madigan (Austin O'Brien) attends a private screening of the action film "Jack Slater IV" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, at a cinema managed by Danny's friend Nick (Robert Prosky). But, Danny's ticket magically transports Danny into the movie and meets the film's fictional title character Jack Slater (Arnold Schwarzenegger) a larger than life Los Angeles police detective and Danny joins Jack,Jack sets out to settle a score with Mr. Benedict (Charles Dance), the right hand man of mob boss Tony Vivaldi (Anthony Quinn), whom tortured and killed Jack's cousin Frank (Art Carney). But, Benedict takes possession of Danny's ticket and enters the real world and Danny and Jack leave the film to go after him and Danny and Jack set out to stop Benedict from assassinating Schwarzenegger at the film's premiere in New York City, which Benedict believes, if Schwarzenegger dies, there will be no more Jack Slater films. The word was most likely "fuck".<br/><br/>In movies rated PG-13, films are only allowed to use that particular word or a variant of it once. Twice on rare occasions, depending on context; suchthe movie Lakeview Terrace or The Martian. It also could have been "Mother-Fucker"that variant hasn't been spoken in a PG-13 film. Interestingly enough, this film only says the word once at the very end of the movie when Slater's Captain is once again yelling at Slater.<br/><br/>The word may also have been "cunt"it has never been used in a PG-13 film either.<br/><br/>
